Birchwood Health is a free national directory of SAMHSA-verified addiction treatment centers, created to make finding quality care accessible to every American who needs it. We maintain verified listings of 1,201 treatment facilities across all 50 states — including inpatient rehab, outpatient programs, medical detox, dual diagnosis treatment, and sober living homes.
According to SAMHSA's 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, over 29 million Americans meet the criteria for a substance use disorder — yet fewer than 25% receive any form of treatment. The barriers are significant: families don't know where to look, insurance verification is confusing, and the quality of facilities varies widely. Birchwood Health exists to remove those barriers.
We provide a searchable, verified directory of treatment centers with transparent information about services, insurance acceptance, program types, and treatment approaches — all in one place, completely free. When a family is facing a crisis at 2am, they should be able to find verified, trustworthy options immediately.
Every treatment center in our directory is sourced from and cross-referenced against the SAMHSA National Registry of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) — the federal database of licensed and certified substance abuse treatment facilities maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This means every listing has been verified by a government agency for licensure and operational status.
Birchwood Health is an independent directory service. We do not own, operate, or have financial relationships with any of the treatment centers listed. We do not receive referral fees from facilities in exchange for placement or prominence in search results. Our helpline connects callers with licensed treatment providers — we never recommend a center we haven't verified exists and is currently operational.
All educational content on Birchwood Health — articles, treatment guides, and resource pages — is written and reviewed by our editorial team with backgrounds in addiction medicine, behavioral health, and public health communications. We reference authoritative sources including SAMHSA, NIDA, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), and peer-reviewed research published in journals such as JAMA, the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, and Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
We do not publish content that promotes specific facilities or treatments without clinical evidence. Our goal is to give individuals and families the information they need to make informed decisions — not to sell them on any particular program.
